Devotions in the Bathroom

Am I the only mom of preschoolers who has devotions in the bathroom because it's the least likely place I will be interrupted?

We're reading in Romans at our church right now, the whole church. It's the coolest feeling to know that everyone is reading the same passages of scripture and studying together. I was just having a conversation with a friend of mine, who is Catholic about how one of the amazing things is the Catholic church is that EVERY Catholic church worldwide is reading the same Scriptures at Mass. (That sentence was a little like Paul's, really long.) So when she and her hubby are apart (he's in the Navy) it's comforting to know that they are hearing the same passages.

Seattle Pacific University, located in Seattle (obviously), provides free guided Bible reading help, essentially commentary on the passages. So, if you are like me and kind of flounder around when it comes to personal time in God's word, think about joining us. We've only just started, so you aren't very far behind! They also offer a podcast if you are one who likes to listen while you make dinner or do the dishes.

  1. Awesome! A lot of other churches also follow the same "lectionary" text week by week. It's called the revised common lectionary and in 3 years you will have read all of the bible in church (an old testament reading, psalm, new testament and gospel reading each Sunday). My husband (a Lutheran pastor) preaches on the lectionary text each week (mostly the gospel). He says it pushes him to not take the easy way out and really struggle and work with the text given to see what God is saying to us for that week. Enjoy Romans and your alone time in the bathroom!

  2. This is so cool to read about! I'm glad you and your church are following the SPU online resource: "Lectio" (which just means reading in Latin) as you study the book of Romans. And we on campus at SPU are doing the same thing (in terms of everyone reading the same passage of scripture each week). We would love to get feedback from you about the usefulness of the Lectio material and in the meantime, pray God's richest blessings on you as you study scripture(in the bathroom or WHEREVER you find the quiet time!) p.s. As a Mom, I do remember the challenges. But God's word so worth it.....hang in there.
